Jalen Hurts' improved MVP odds mirroring strong play

Coming into the season, the biggest question surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles has been what to expect from Jalen Hurts. The franchise made some notable moves surrounding the quarterback and providing him with the tools needed for his success. However, there was lingering concern about whether he was ready to evolve into the true franchise quarterback the organization hoped. Through the first three games of the season, the third-year quarterback has more than answered the call.

While it is still extremely early in the season, Hurts currently ranks third in the NFL in passing yards. He has completed 66 of his 98 pass attempts for 916 yards. The Alabama product has thrown for four touchdowns and also leads the NFL with 9.3 yards per pass attempt and 13.9 yards per completion. This ability to throw the ball down the field has been one of the biggest question marks heading into the season, and he has given a clear answer to start the season. Hurts has not hesitated to target his receivers down the field and flashes impressive ability with his arm this season. The former second-round pick has also added 167 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well.

The entire NFL has been put on notice with Hurts' impressive level of play. The Eagles quarterback has also climbed into the MVP conversation due to his level of production. Despite starting the season with 30/1 odds for the prestigious award, Hurts is now in the top five favorites. Most recently he has ranked fourth, trailing only Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, and holding +700 odds to win the award. His dominant Monday Night performance over the Vikings in Week 2 played the biggest role in the MVP leap, although its potential payout has decreased following all three weeks.  According to Pro Football Focus, his chances of securing the award have climbed to 13% after starting the season with a 7.9% chance.

There is still plenty of time left in the season, but it is impossible not to be impressed with Hurts’ on-field performance thus far. He most recently was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for his strong play. The Eagles also are now the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL and their quarterback deserves a ton of credit for his impact on getting the team there. Expectations have grown significantly for the team as they continue to progress. The Eagles' Super Bowl odds also have changed, as they trail only the Bills and Chiefs for the shortest odds. There is a great deal of potential for both the team and Hurts as the season continues, and his MVP resume continues to be written.
