Jalen Hurts to cover funeral costs for Texas HS football star killed in shooting
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will pay for the funeral of Jarvon Coles, a Texas high school football player who was killed on March 9

According to NFL Networks' Ian Rapoport, Hurts read the story of Coles from his rival school in Texas and didn't hesitate to reach out to help.

"Just learned that Eagles QB Jalen Hurts read about the passing of this football player from a rival high school and decided to pay for his funeral expenses. Heartwarming end to a gut-wrenching story," Rapoport wrote on X/Twitter.

According to Troy Kless, Cheryl Mercedes, and Lupita Villarreal of KHOU 11, Cole was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound at a party around 11 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.

KHOU 11 reported that police were initially called to the scene for a welfare check in response to reports of underage drinking. When deputies got there, they were told that a man, now identified as Coles, was in the backyard having a seizure.

Police were attempting CPR when they noticed a gunshot wound to Coles' chest. Coles was transported to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told KHOU 11 that it appeared the shooter or shooters "intentionally shot" in the direction of the party from about a block away.

Police are still looking for suspects.

Jarvon's grandfather and legal guardian, Braxton Coles, told KHOU 11 that Coles was a two-time first-team all-district linebacker at North Shore High School and had a 4.1 GPA.

He also said Jarvon was accepted into 15 colleges and had plans to play football at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX.

Hurts played out his high school football career at Channelview, a longtime rival to North Shore, before taking his talents to the University of Alabama.
