When Philadelphia Eagles fans talk about edge rusher Jalyx Hunt, it's about the potential breakout season he could have with his pass-rushing abilities. There's another aspect to his game that isn't nearly as talked about as it should be.
NBC Sports Philadelphia Eagles reporter Dave Zangaro shared in his observations from Tuesday's training camp practice how well Hunt was doing with beating offensive lin emen 1-on-1. Zangaro also shared how Hunt did in pass coverage.
"Jalyx Hunt was beating Matt Pryor (filling in for Jordan Mailata at left tackle) with ease. He had at least one sack and a few pressures. Hunt also looked comfortable dropping into coverage to break up a pass to Nick Muse from Kyle McCord."
There's been a lot of excitement built around Hunt all offseason. That hype was high enough for the Eagles to decide to not re-sign Josh Sweat and trade Bryce Huff.
In his rookie year last season, Hunt finished with 21 tackles, three quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, and one pass deflection i n 16 games. He shone the most in the postseason as he got 10 tackles, three quarterback hits, and 1.5 sacks in just four games, as his role was increased with Brandon Graham and Huff's injuries.
The Eagles are hoping that Hunt can have the same breakout season that Nolan Smith Jr. had off the edge in 2024. Smith was second on the team in sacks with six, but also showed that he can drop back into pass coverage.
That's a part of Hunt's game that isn't nearly talked about as much. Hunt is just as athletic as Smith is and can make plays in stopping the pass on short yards when he needs to.
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio needs that in his edge rushers, as he wants versatile defenders. Hunt will need to continue to show this trait, as there will come a point where rookie first-round pick Jihaad Campbell will eventually move to edge, and he's already stellar in pass coverage.
A lot of excitement is around Hunt, but don't sleep on how athletic he is. He's going to make some big plays for the Eagles on defense this season.
