Ja’Marr Chase supports Bengals' training-camp scuffle

The Cincinnati Bengals are under a ton of pressure to perform this season and everyone in the locker room knows it. They’ve failed to make the playoffs for the past three seasons despite having one of the best quarterback-wide receiver combos in the league with Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase.

The former Offensive Player of the Year has done his fair share, hauling in more than 4,000 yards worth of passes and 32 touchdowns over the last three seasons, but Burrow has had some trouble staying on the field. Now, the quarterback seems to be at full strength and the dynamic duo is ready to take the league by storm again this season.

However, Cincinnati’s training camp got off to a rocky start after Chase got into a scuffle with cornerback Jalen Davis. The two began pushing and shoving each other, which eventually led to both the offense and defense creating a massive crowd around the two players.

Nobody got hurt during the skirmish, and there seems to be no hard feelings about the situation, but Chase had an interesting perspective on it. When asked if he likes seeing that competitive fire come out of defensive backs, the star receiver kept his response short and simple. “That’s what I want. That’s exactly what I want,” said Chase.

Why Bengals’ fight could be a good sign for 2026

He probably doesn’t want to get into fights with his teammates often, but the intensity is a welcome sight for him after years of the defense showing no fight. From all accounts, including Burrow, that side of the ball looks much more disruptive to begin camp and refuses to be pushed around, as evidenced by the fight.

In a do-or-die season, this is the exact type of fire the Bengals need to exhibit to show opponents that they won’t be a pushover anymore. Hopefully there are no more major flare ups between teammates, but the team will be golden if it can put this type of energy and effort on the field during the regular season.

Talent and offensive firepower has never been Cincinnati’s problem, it’s been health and a shoddy, uninspiring defense for the last few years. Health could still play a factor with more than a month left until the start of the season, but it looks like the Bengals might finally be fielding a defense they can be proud of and rely on.
