The New York Giants made a major move on Monday when they traded for former top draft pick J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick.
McCarthy was acquired to provide quarterback depth for a Giants team scrambling for help after losing starter Jaxson Dart to a season-ending knee injury. However, even after being acquired, the 23-year-old is set to back up current starter Jameis Winston for the time being.
While that may be the current situation, it creates an interesting dynamic where Winston could quickly find himself on the hot seat if he doesn’t produce.
Speaking with reporters for the first time since the trade, Winston made his intentions clear when asked whether he felt challenged by McCarthy’s addition.
“I feel challenged to get better every single day,” Winston said. “I just think that’s the makeup of who I am as a person and always looking for ways to build on the positives and eliminate the negatives. No matter the circumstances, condition, or facts, my mind is on what my heart desires, and that’s to be a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.”

The veteran quarterback made his first start for New York last Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, battling through rainy and difficult conditions to help the Giants scratch out a 12-7 win despite a lackluster individual performance.
Winston completed 14-of-22 pass attempts for just 118 yards and failed to throw a touchdown. The 32-year-old looked uncomfortable for much of the game, similar to his first appearance against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2 after coming on for Dart.
The uninspiring performance was uncharacteristic for a quarterback who has built a reputation for letting it rip, accumulating plenty of passing yards while also taking risks that can lead to turnovers.
Given those struggles, McCarthy could quickly become an option if the Giants continue to have trouble producing offensively.
However, when asked about that possibility, Winston once again remained focused on the present.
“I can’t even think about tomorrow because it’s not tomorrow. Today has enough worries of its own,” he said.
The good news for Winston is that the Giants have a favorable schedule over their next three games, starting this Sunday at home against the Arizona Cardinals before facing the Washington Commanders and New Orleans Saints.
As long as he continues to produce wins, no matter how they come, Winston should remain the starter with McCarthy waiting behind him.
