Cleveland Browns pass rusher Jared Verse is feeling let down by his teammates after a controversial incident that happened to him last Sunday.
Verse was bodyslammed by a Pittsburgh Steelers player during his team’s 27-6 loss on Sunday, a response to comments he made about Pittsburgh’s offensive line playing dirty. On Thursday, Verse said he was frustrated by the incident, but was perhaps more annoyed that none of his teammates stepped up to defend him.
“The lack of reaction by those around me had upset me a lot,” Verse said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “They were focused on the game and everything like that, but a similar play happened to Derek Barnett on the next field goal, and I spazzed, I lost it. Because those are my brothers, those are my teammates, and when you do something like that to them, it upsets me deeply. We have to get better, we have to be aware. These are my teammates, these are my brothers, and we’re not fighting for each other.”
Verse added that he had addressed the situation with his teammates. He also took responsibility for the whole incident taking place at all in light of what he said about the Steelers after their first meeting of the season.
Verse is largely correct that he was left hanging by his teammates (video here). A lot of Browns players seemingly had their backs turned to the incident, which explains some of it. One has to wonder if he is still as enthusiastic about being a Brown as he was after initially being traded there.
