Jaxson Dart, Giants react to gruesome Cam Skattebo injury in loss to Eagles

The New York Giants suffered more than a defeat as they endured a 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, as New York rookie running back Cam Skattebo went down with a gruesome dislocation of his right ankle midway through the game's second quarter.

Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart couldn't hide his emotions once he realized the seriousness of Skattebo's injury. After the game, Dart spoke openly about what he saw at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.

Jaxson Dart "devastated" over Cam Skattebo injury

"I was devastated," Dart said, per Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic. "It’s my boy, man, so seeing him go down and obviously reacting to what happened, that sucks. It’s the worst part of this game."

As ESPN's Jordan Raanan wrote, Skattebo was eventually taken to a Philadelphia-area hospital, where he was scheduled to have surgery on Sunday night. His season is certainly over, and his status for the start of the 2026 campaign may be up in the air.

Giants players previously mentioned how Skattebo's energy and hard-nosed playing style gave the club a needed "boost" after it lost four of its first five games this season. As Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com noted, Skattebo tried to fire up his teammates before he was carted off the field on Sunday. It didn't work, as the Eagles outscored the Giants 24-6 from the first play after the injury to before Dart scored a meaningless touchdown in garbage time.

"When you see somebody go down like that, their dreams got snatched away — for at least a period of time," Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton added. "So it’s hard to watch. I just saw the way his foot was positioned, and I looked away, because I don’t like to look at things like that for very long."

Jaxson Dart upset by "embarrassing feeling" of losing

The Giants were already without No. 1 receiver Malik Nabers after he tore his ACL in late September. 2-6 Big Blue now won't have a locker-room favorite in Skattebo through January, but Dart declined to make excuses for the team's record after Sunday's blowout.

"I’m trying to say this the right way," Dart said, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. "I thought they really kind of dominated most of the game. And it’s an embarrassing feeling. ...We’ve gotta start figuring out ways to win. Because I hate losing. I’m not used to it. I’m not gonna accept it. I’m not going to be OK with it, and we as a team can’t be OK with it. We have to figure this out."

The Giants will try to figure things out as they prepare to host the San Francisco 49ers (5-3) on Nov. 2. As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had New York as a 2.5-point home underdog for that contest.
