The Washington Commanders are hoping to get star quarterback Jayden Daniels back this weekend. Nothing is set in stone, though, and now Adam Schefter has revealed that his ability to play on Sunday is going to be in the hands of his doctors.

Schefter shared an update on Daniels during Thursday’s episode of Get Up. There, he shared that Daniels is back practicing for the Commanders. However, even with an improved knee, there’s no guarantee he plays unless he can get cleared medically.

“Back at practice yesterday [Wednesday] in a limited fashion,” Schefter said. “He said his knee feels better, but it will be a doctor’s decision about whether or not he plays on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. He’s leaving it in the hands of others. We’ll see what they say.”

Daniels underwent an MRI on his knee following Washington’s loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night of Week 2. Ultimately, it turned out that he had a sprained knee. There had been some hope that he could get back for Week 3, but that didn’t happen with the team choosing to play it safe. Now, his status continues to be up in the air.

Assuming that Daniels is unable to play, Washington will once again turn to backup quarterback Marcus Mariota. Against the Raiders, he would help lead the Commanders to a 41-point performance. He’d complete 15 of 21 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 40 yards and another touchdown.

“If he can’t go, Marcus Mariota would play again,” Schefter said. “And Marcus Mariota played very well on Sunday in the Commanders’ victory over the Raiders.”

As a rookie last season, Daniels helped get Washington to the NFC Championship Game. They cameup short there, but there is hope that 2025 can be the season the Commanders get over the hump. In the process, the former second overall pick made the Pro Bowl and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

Through two games played this season, Daniels has completed 59.7% of passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 85 yards.

The Commanders would obviously prefer to have Jayden Daniels on the field than on the bench. However, there is a long-term need to keep him healthy. After all, if the Commanders want to make a deep playoff run, they’ll need their star quarterback. So, only time will tell if he’ll suit up for Washington’s game in Atlanta against the Falcons on Sunday.
