Jaylen Wright Needs to have Strong Training Camp
When former general manager Chris Grier traded a future third-round pick to move up for Jaylen Wright in the 2024 draft, it seemed as if the former Tennessee running back would play a big role in Miami’s running back for the foreseeable future.
But now, as he enters his third season with the team, his time in Miami may be close to running out.
He played in 10 games during his rookie year, finishing with 70 carries, 288 yards, and two touchdowns.
It seemed like he would have a bigger role in year two as the Dolphins parted ways with Raheem Mostert that offseason, but then that changed quickly as Miami drafted fellow running back Ollie Gordon II in the sixth round of the 2025 draft.
Gordon had a strong showing in the following pre-season and quickly became another short-yardage option for Mike McDaniel, a role that seemed to be destined for Wright.
While Wright did end up playing 15 games in 2025, five more than in his rookie season, his role was diminished as Gordon split the short-yardage back duties with him, as the former Doak Walker Award Winner tallied three touchdowns on only 70 carries for 199 yards.
Now, entering 2026, Miami has changed coaching staffs and also added another running back to the potential mix for competition behind workhorse De’von Achane.
While it does seem like new head coach, Jeff Hafley, and new offensive coordinator, Bobby Slowik, will be looking to transition to more of a power running game with the additions of Kadyn Proctor and Will Kacmarek, Wright still has his work cut out for him.
Even if he beats out Ollie Gordon II this summer, he will face competition from undrafted rookie Le’Veon Moss.
Moss, like Wright and Gordon, is a bigger-bodied back at 5’11, 203 pounds.
He was a second-team All-SEC player in 2024 as he led the Aggies with 765 rushing.
Moss also led the Aggies in receiving touchdowns in 2025 with six, and presumably would have been drafted had it not been for injury concerns, which included a torn ACL/MCL injury at the end of his junior season.
If Moss is healthy and performs well this training camp, it would be very easy for the new Dolphins front office to choose him over Wright, with Wright becoming a prime trade candidate as he was not picked by this current regime.
Should that happen, it would be a tough way to end a short stint for a player who had a lot of hype when the team drafted him just a few years ago.
