All indications are that the New England Patriots plan to bring Jerod Mayo back as the team's head coach in 2025.

But with some of the things that have gone on this season and candidates like Mike Vrabel still on the market, could the team have a change of heart?

Per the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, Mayo remains under the impression that the Pats job is his for at least the next year. Saying, "I'm always in constant communication with ownership, and feel like we're still on the same page."

Everyone knew it was going to be a tough season in Foxborough breaking in a rookie head coach, in a competitive division, with a roster that many viewed as "rebuilding" — to put it nicely. But at 3-13 the Patriots are once again in the mix to land the No. 1 pick with a loss to the Bills in Week 18.

If there's any silver lining, it at least looks like New England found its quarterback in third overall pick Drake Maye. However, it's hard to ignore the chants of "Fire Mayo!" that have been ringing out at Gillette Stadium.

At least it doesn't sound like he's lost the locker room yet either. After Saturday's 40-7 loss to the Chargers, veteran defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. went to bat for his coach.

"I think he's doing a great job, keeping us motivated and prepared and locked in on our goals every week," Wise said, via Mike Weiss of ESPN.com. "It's up to the players. Coaches coach, players play. ... I feel like Mayo is putting people in the right positions, he's very positive but also criticizes people in a motivating way."

"I don't think we should write him off right now. A lot of coaches start off tough, but there are multiple coaches who are OK now and in the playoffs. I feel like we need to continue to believe in Coach and he'll find a way to make everything right next year."

We'll see where things go from here but as of right now it appears the Kraft Family is willing to give Jerod the benefit of the doubt.
