In what has been a down year for the Dallas Cowboys, George Pickens has quickly established himself as one of the team’s most impactful offensive players. Acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in May 2025, Pickens stepped into a featured role alongside CeeDee Lamb and delivered immediate results.
His combination of size, downfield ability, and contested-catch success added a new dimension to the Cowboys’ passing game and provided quarterback Dak Prescott with a reliable secondary option.
Entering the season finale, Pickens has recorded 92 receptions for 1,420 yards and nine touchdowns, emerging as one of the NFL’s most productive wide receivers.
As the Cowboys transition into the offseason, roster decisions now take center stage following a year that fell short of expectations. Dallas faces several personnel questions, but few are as significant as Pickens’ long-term future.
The wide receiver is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and his strong production has accelerated conversations around a potential extension. How the Cowboys handle Pickens’ contract situation could shape both their offensive identity and salary-cap strategy heading into 2026.
Pickens is currently playing in the final year of his four-year, $6.75 million rookie contract, originally signed after he was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and is expected to command a huge contract given his resume.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has addressed Pickens’ situation all season long and looks intent on keeping him in Dallas. During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Jones was asked whether he expects to handle talks directly with Pickens or through his agent, David Mulugheta.
“I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes. Probably both,” Jones said.

Jones’ comment is interesting considering his recent history with Mulugheta, who also represented Micah Parsons during the Cowboys’ highly publicized contract standoff earlier this year. During that negotiation, Jones publicly suggested he had reached an understanding directly with Parsons, while Mulugheta disputed that characterization and emphasized that no formal deal had been presented through him.
The communication breakdown became public, strained the relationship between the sides, and ultimately contributed to Parsons’s exit from Dallas to join the Green Bay Packers.
Mulugheta will now play a central role in Pickens’ future in Dallas if negotiations advance. It remains to be seen if both sides can reach an agreement this time or if history repeats itself.
