Jerry Jones, Cowboys Make Decision After Brian Schottenheimer’s Request

The message from the Cowboys camp is clear. They want to win and win now. However, this wasn’t the reason behind the franchise’s decision to waive Joe Milton. The Cowboys chose Sam Howell over Milton as Prescott’s backup, with Schottenheimer citing Howell’s operational consistency in executing the offense. The franchise decided to waive Milton after claiming Emari Demercado off waivers, with Milton being the corresponding move.

However, head coach Schottenheimer saw upside in Milton and wanted to keep him in Dallas if he cleared waivers. This led to Schottenheimer wanting the franchise to bring Milton back to the practice squad if he cleared waivers.

When asked about wanting Milton back on the practice squad, Schottenheimer said, “Absolutely.” The Cowboys head coach provided further clarity, saying, “I think we looked at the whole body of work, and we just felt like Sam had done a little bit more just in terms of executing the offense in certain areas.”

After Milton cleared waivers, Jones and the Cowboys decided to re-sign him to the practice squad.

Milton will serve as the dual-threat scout-team quarterback as he continues to develop his game. While Prescott is the present for the Cowboys, this move could help secure the future of the franchise.
