The Cowboys held a 14-point lead at one point during the fourth quarter of today’s home game against the Cardinals. They wound up losing in overtime, marking another low point in the 2026 season.
After the game, owner/general manager Jerry Jones spoke about his level of frustration with the outcome. Dallas now sits at 3-5 and has yet to string together consecutive wins this season, Brian Schottenheimer’s second as head coach. Nevertheless, consideration is not being given to a change on the sidelines.
“Yeah, we’re not going to get into anything,” Jones said (via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News). “That’s not in my mind at this time… None of us are getting it done and that should be my concern. So I’m not pointing at Schotty, I’m not pointing to anybody, but none of us have it done.”
Heading into today’s game, the Cowboys had never lost at home while holding a lead of at least 14 points during the fourth quarter. That has now changed, with Arizona’s decision to insert Gardner Minshew at quarterback sparking an offensive surge. Dallas’ defense surrendered 337 yards and allowed 27 points with Minshew at the helm between the remainder of regulation and overtime.
Issues on that side of the ball have been persistent all season. First-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker has been the subject of consistent criticism, and the trade acquisition of cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has not been sufficient to move Dallas out of the bottom half of the league in many defensive categories. Further moves in the short term will be difficult to pull off given the team’s limited draft capital.
Schottenheimer’s record coaching the Cowboys is 10-14-1. Production on offense has largely been a strong point – as expected – during his tenure, but another year outside of the playoffs is increasingly becoming a distinct possibility. Jones has a history of retaining coaches past the point many observers feel he should, and keeping Schottenheimer through an underwhelming campaign would no doubt lead to fresh criticism on that front. Nevertheless, it comes as little surprise a HC firing is not currently on the radar for the Cowboys.
