Jerry Jones Makes 'Tush Push' Stance Perfectly Clear

FRISCO — The NFL audience took a short reprieve from a focus on the upcoming draft to monitor potential developments coming out of the league's annual meeting last week. Many wondered what would be done with the "tush push" play in particular.

The Green Bay Packers have brought forward a proposal to ban the controversial rule. Proponents of the ban believe the play gives one side a decidedly unfair advantage after the snap.

But a final decision will not come down until a later time with the discussion being tabled for meetings in May. While pundits and team representatives alike have weighed in on the matter, Dallas Cowboys' owner and general manager Jerry Jones took his own stance on the rule.

“The reason we got the 2-point play is [we] said the extra point alone kicking it is not exciting enough,” Jones told Yahoo Sports. “That reminded me of how those things have evolved.

This should come as no surprise to Cowboys fans, but Jones' top priority with regard to the tush push centers around its entertainment value. If the play jeopardizes the league in that way, then that is a cause for concern.

“It was more from the entertainment standpoint — which from my perspective, is a good discussion. The fact that fans could be interested in what we do with it. We do things, and if somebody does it really well or gets an edge, we might make defensive, offensive adjustments.

As Yahoo Sports notes, the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles have both found immense success on the play, converting at a league-best 87%. Jones' perspective may sound pretty ridiculous considering the viewpoints on both sides but there is some merit to his perspective.

The basis of taking away a play because of the continued of success of two teams makes it difficult to stand on a mandate for all. Additionally, there is not enough data to support a ban on the grounds of health concerns or any other issue.

From both sides of the aisle, it is hard to ignore the impact the play has on the entertainment value of a game.

Nonetheless, the controversy around the "tush push" will continue up until decision time and likely after the final verdict as well.
