Jerry Jones Reveals Reasoning Behind Ezekiel Elliott Decision

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have had a very disappointing season in 2024 following three straight years in the playoffs.

Over the last offseason, Jones failed to make any notable moves to improve his team, despite saying he is "all in." His most significant signing may have been bringing back running back Ezekiel Elliott.

However, after losing his starting job to Rico Dowdle early on in the year, Elliott's snap count decreased dramatically, only recording 74 carries throughout. The former Ohio State Buckeyes star only tallied double-digit carries in two games this season.

Following the Cowboys' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17, Elliott requested a release from the team. And Jones has granted it.

The Dallas owner and general manager released an official statement on Tuesday afternoon, revealing why he decided to part ways with his running back.

“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today," Jones wrote. "As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.”

After making an All-Pro team in two of his first three seasons with the Cowboys, Elliott's production started to decline around the time Mike McCarthy joined the organization in 2020. He was released by Dallas for the first time after the 2022 season. Elliott spent 2023 with the New England Patriots.

In 15 games played for the Cowboys in 2024, Elliott tallied 74 carries for 226 yards and three touchdowns. With what seems to be little left in the tank, the No. 4 pick in the 2016 NFL draft will look to make one final playoff run with a new team if he clears waivers and is signed.
