During a 29-27 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New York Jets revealed a new wrinkle in their special teams game plan by unleashing running back Braelon Allen as the returner.

Despite Allen playing a significant role on the team's offense, New York decided to use the talented player in a new way. When speaking with reporters ahead of Monday night's game against the Miami Dolphins, special teams coordinator Chris Banjo explained the decision.

“When we talk about everybody on our roster, we are always looking to use the talent that God has blessed them with,” Banjo he said. “On a week-to-week basis, we are always looking to find and use skill sets that can be advantageous for us.”

Just a few days later, the team's decision to put Allen on kick return backfired when the talented running back left the game with an injury.

Video showed Allen injured while returning a kick. The running back planted his left leg to take another step when his knee was run into by a Dolphins special teams player causing Allen's leg to bend inward awkwardly.

Just minutes after he left the game, the Jets ruled Allen out for the rest of the contest - an early sign that there could be significant damage to his left knee.

Earlier in the game he appeared poised for a touchdown run when the ball was punched out on the 1-yard line.

Coming into Monday night's game against the Dolphins, Allen racked up 50 yards on 14 carries on the ground with another 17 yards through the air in three games this season. Now he appears to have suffered a potentially serious knee injury that could see him miss time.
