Jets CB addresses Garrett Wilson, Davante Adams narrative

Per Ryan Chichester of Audacy, former New York Jets quarterback and current NFL analyst Boomer Esiason openly wondered earlier this week if young Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson could react negatively to the team landing disgruntled Las Vegas Raiders star Davante Adams in a trade this fall. Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post has since echoed Esiason's take. 

Jets cornerback D.J. Reed poured cold water over such concerns during a midweek chat with The Post's Steve Serby.

"I can’t speak for him," Reed said about Wilson, "but I don’t think he would be mad that we got another good receiver. If anything, that would take double-teams off him 'cause he’s getting double-teamed every game." 

Wilson and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers visibly lacked chemistry at times over the season's first four weeks, but ESPN stats show that the talented third-year pro leads the Jets with 20 receptions and 34 targets on the campaign. It's thought New York's current No. 1 receiver may not love seeing passes that otherwise would've been for him go to Adams, Rodgers' teammate with the Green Bay Packers from 2014 through the 2021 season, as the 24-year-old works to secure a future payday. 

"I would assume [Adams] would be able to give Garrett pointers and stuff," Reed said about what the 31-year-old could offer the Jets behind the scenes. "And I think Garrett would also be able to give him pointers 'cause he’s a phenomenal football player." 

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport are among those who have reported that Adams "is focused on engineering a trade to the Jets" ahead of the Nov. 5 deadline for such transactions because "New York is where the Raiders star wants to play." Adams has also been linked with the New Orleans Saints because he previously had New Orleans' Derek Carr as his QB1 in college and with the Raiders. 

With all that said, it's believed the Raiders "are in no rush to trade Adams" and could hold onto him through the first Tuesday of November if clubs such as the Jets and Saints don't meet Las Vegas' asking price for the three-time first-team All-Pro. 

The harsh truth of the matter is that Rodgers likely cares little about what Wilson or others in the locker room think about Adams possibly joining the Jets before Thanksgiving. The future Hall of Famer turns 41 years old this December, is looking to earn a second career Super Bowl ring before he rides off into the sunset of retirement and wants to be reunited with his good friend and favorite target. 

Discussions about Wilson's future with the franchise beyond this season can and likely will be pushed aside until further notice.
