New York Jets fans will be very upset if an NFL insider who covers the cross-town rival New York Giants is correct.
ESPN's Jordan Raanan, who follows the Giants for the network, projects the Giants are going to pursue Jets' cornerback D.J. Reed in free agency and are the only team to have the need and the cap space to sign the soon-to-be-former Jets star.
Raanan and ESPN's national insider Jeremy Fowler believe the Jets are going to lose Reed to the Giants with a four-year deal worth an estimated $72 million over four years. Raanan went one step further and predicts up to $40 million will be guaranteed.
"The Giants need a No. 1 cornerback in the worst way, and Reed is the best option on the free agent market. He can cover and tackle, and he has already proved capable of handling the New York market," Raanan said.
Raanan then brought up the fact Reed did not have very many interceptions with the Jets. He only had six in his seven-year career.
"Reed might not be your prototypical shutdown corner, but the Giants will pay him as such to move across town," Raanan said. "Last season, they gave up 7.7 yards per pass attempt (29th) and had only five interceptions (31st)."
Dan Graziano, who covers the Jets for ESPN piped in with his own comments and believes the Giants are going to end up with Reed after a tough negotiation battle with the Green Bay Packers.
"The Packers were a lot of fun to think about here. But unless they get their offer a little closer to New York's -- it's a $3 million difference per year -- I can't justify turning down what the Giants are giving," Graziano said. "Plus, Reed gets to stay in New Jersey."
