The New York Jets said goodbye to linebacker C.J. Mosley back in March, and today, Mosley said goodbye to the NFL. The five-time All-Pro linebacker has decided to retire from the NFL on his 33 rd birthday.

Mosley was the 17th overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft of the Ravens out of the University of Alabama. He won back-to-back National Championships with the Crimson Tide along with winning the Butkus Award and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

He spent the last six seasons with the Jets after being named an All-Pro four of his five years with Baltimore. The Jets him in March after he was limited to four games last year due to multiple injuries, including a herniated disc in his neck.

Mosley signed with the New York Jets in 2019 but only played in two games across his first two seasons with the team after an injury in 2019 and opting out of the 2020 covid season. He was headed towards free agent “bust status” with the Jets but came back with a vengeance in 2021. Mosley posted at least 152 tackles each of the previous three years with the Jets, tying him for the most consecutive seasons with at least 150 tackles in NFL history.

Mosley was the quarterback of the Jets defense when it was at it’s most dominant two years ago and was a leader in the locker room. He earned his fifth All-Pro selection of his career as a member of the Jets in 2022. He finishes his 11-year NFL career with totals of 1,083 tackles, 12 sacks and 12 interceptions and 53 additional pass break-ups.

In his five years with the Ravens, Mosley compiled totals of 579 tackles, nine interceptions, 8.5 sacks and six forced fumbles while helping Baltimore finish top nine in the NFL in scoring defense four of those five seasons, including second in 2018.

Mosley might have been released by the Jets in March, but the vet has still been helping his former teammates whenever he can. Linebacker Quincy Williams told the media that he has met with Mosley several times and has been picking his brain on football, and being a leader in the locker room.

The Jets were able to get some financial relief but cutting Mosley this offseason largely because of the emergence of linebacker Jamien Sherwood, who had a breakout year and earned a hefty contract from new GM Darren Mougey just before the start of NFL free agency.

Jet fans everywhere will be sad to see Mosley gone from the NFL, but happy not to see him suit up in another uniform. He was one of the true clubhouse leaders that kept the defense strong when the offense was at its lowest point. Now he gets to start the next chapter of his life.
