Things continued to go from bad to worse for the New York Jets under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn on Sunday, as the last-place club fell to 0-7 on the season via a disheartening 13-6 home loss to an unspectacular Carolina Panthers (4-3) side.
After his team's latest defeat, Glenn addressed concerns about his players starting to tune him out amid what's already become another lost campaign for the organization.
"I don’t see that," Glenn said about possibly losing the locker room this fall, per Ian O'Connor of The Athletic. "Because the messaging has always been consistent, and they know exactly what it is and what they have to do. And here’s what gives me hope as I go through these weeks … is, man, just exactly how they come out on Wednesday in practice, and how they come out on Thursday in practice, and the same with on Friday."
In September, Glenn oddly ranted about the "same old Jets" reputation that has hovered over the franchise during what's become the longest active postseason drought across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS (tied with the Buffalo Sabres at 14 seasons). More recently, Glenn boldly compared Justin Fields to MVP quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen roughly 48 hours before Glenn benched Fields in favor of backup Tyrod Taylor.
"I put a lot of fault on me," Glenn said about an offense that failed to tally a touchdown for a second straight outing. "As the head coach of this team, I have to make sure that we do whatever we have to do to get our passing game going."
It's no secret some Jets players wanted the franchise to run it back with future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers for one more season. While the Rodgers-led Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-2, the Jets' decision to replace him with Fields currently looks like one of the biggest mistakes of the offseason.
As SNY's Garrett Stepien mentioned, Glenn declined on Sunday to say if Fields or Taylor will start when the Jets play at the Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) on Oct. 26. As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had the Jets as 5.5-point underdogs for that matchup.
"We've got to improve," Glenn added during his postgame comments. "We have to improve in this situation because now you see what they're doing against the run -- they're loading the box against the run. Sometimes they're putting nine people in the box."
Logic suggests neither Fields nor the 36-year-old Taylor will be the Jets' Week 1 QB1 next September. At this point, it's fair to wonder if Glenn will be part of the franchise's search for its next starting quarterback this coming winter.
