It's been a rocky start to training camp for the New York Jets and their passing attack. Under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, a first-time offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, and a new quarterback in Justin Fields, growing pains are to be expected. But the severity of the Jets' offensive struggles early this week have captured the attention of the national media, as Fields and the offensive have continuously had their passes falling harmlessly to the turf in recent days.
Things have ascended to the point of a stat counter keeping a rolling tab of incompletions across multiple days of practice for Fields. At what point does the lack of connectivity become a legitimate worry and how much of this is still just early training camp norms?
In the words of an old friend, now is time for Jets fans to 'R-E-L-A-X'!
There's lots of focus of Fields and his completion rate at practice over the last few days. Let's be fair and objective here — it's the first week of August amid an install that has brand new faces all over the organization. There's loads of information to parse through and loads of time between now and when the Jets start playing for keeps.
If these struggles extend throughout the entirety of the preseason and into the first few games, sure. You can then proceed to smash the panic button for what 2025 is going to look like. But training camp, and to an extend even the preseason games, is about process and not results. As long as Fields, Engstrand, Garrett Wilson and company are investing time to figure out the who, what, where, when, and why of their misfires and mistimed reps, they're using this time optimally.
Now is not the time to cling to results. That comes on Thursdays, Sundays, and Monday nights this fall. This time of year is all about the process. The Jets are working through theirs and have every right to do so at their own pace. So, in the words of last year's quarterback for the Jets, 'relax'!
