To add insult to literal injury, in the fourth quarter of the New York Jets' Sunday loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Jets first round pick Olu Fashanu went down with what the team has described as a foot injury, and had to be carted off of the field after being unable to put weight on his leg.
The Jets were meanwhile unable to rally after the injury, losing the contest 19-9. Max Mitchell came in to replace Fashanu at left tackle.
It was Fashanu's seventh start of his career. Fashanu started in weeks four and five on the right side of the line, and has been a starter the last four weeks at hisc comfort-spot of left tackle. He had begun to come into his own over the last four weeks, looking like a legitimate centerpiece on the offensive line. Coming into Sunday, Fashanu had played 534 offensive snaps, and only allowed one sack.
The injury came during the fourth quarter on second-and-13. Aaron Rodgers found Allen Lazard for nine yards while Fashanu went down. Guard John Simpson and a Jets trainer helped Fashanu off the field before being put on the cart.
Fashanu skipped the blue medical tent altogether and was taken straight to the locker room. Just five minutes after the injury, the team announced that Fashanu was out for the game. Fashanu was on crutches in the locker room after the game. In his post-game presser, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said it was too early to speculate on Fashanu's injury, but he was in pain and he needs further testing.
Fashanu was the Jets' first round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, being taken with the 11th overall pick. Fashanu was drafted out of Penn State. He was named an All American in 2023, and was the Big Ten's Offensive Lineman of the Year. He was the third offensive lineman taken in the draft behind the Chargers' Joe Alt and the Titans' JC Latham.
