Jets Reportedly Will Make Tough Roster Decision After Week 1 Loss to Steelers

The new era of the New York Jets got off to a tough start. The Jets, led by head coach Aaron Glenn and quarterback Justin Fields, fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in a 34-32 loss at home.

The Jets' offense delivered a strong performance, accumulating 394 total yards against one of the top defenses in the NFL. Out of those yards, 182 came from rushing plays. Fields excelled in his Jets debut, throwing for 218 yards and one touchdown, completing 16 of 22 passes. He contributed 48 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground.

Turnover Proves Costly

In a close game, turnovers can be the deciding factor. The Jets had one turnover, while the Steelers had none. The Jets’ turnover occurred during a kickoff return by Xavier Gipson. After the Steelers scored a touchdown to narrow the Jets' lead 26-24 in the fourth quarter, Gipson fumbled the kickoff. Pittsburgh then scored just two plays later, taking a 31-26 lead.

Aaron Glenn Sends Strong Message

On Wednesday, the New York Post reported that Gipson would no longer be with the team. A source told the newspaper that the Jets will release Gipson. This follows Glenn saying that players who make mistakes will not be on the field for the Jets.

“The one thing to me that turned this game is, man, we can’t have turnovers,” Glenn said. “We can’t do it. We have to be a more disciplined team. There were some penalties that happened in that game that were true discipline issues and, again, that’s something that will be addressed because you will not be on the field with this team if you’re going to cause us to lose games, if you’re going to cause issues like that.”

Aside from the fumble, Gipson had a strong performance returning the football. He returned it five times for a total of 142 yards, with a longest return of 40 yards. Gipson ranks third in total yards and ninth in return yards in the NFL.

A third-year pro out of Stephen F. Austin, Gipson caught 27 passes for 268 yards and a touchdown as a backup receiver. As a return specialist, he averaged 26 yards per kickoff return and 8.9 yards per punt return. He returned a punt for a touchdown in 2023.

During this offseason, the Jets decided to keep Gipson on the roster after a training camp competition against rookie Jamaal Pritchett for the returner and backup receiver position. Pritchett is still on the practice squad and is the most likely candidate to take over for Gipson as the team's return man.

For Glenn, the message is clear: Talent alone won’t win games if discipline slips. The Jets showed flashes of what they can be with Fields at the helm, but costly mistakes — turnovers, penalties and missed opportunities — left them searching for answers after just one week.
