Jets to sign veteran RB Frank Gore to one-year deal

Ageless running back Frank Gore is signing a one-year deal with the New York Jets. Drew Rosenhaus, Gore's agent, told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the 36-year-old Gore will serve as backup to Le'Veon Bell.

Gore has played in the league for 15 years and has the third-most rushing yards of all-time (15,347). After playing most of his early career with the San Francisco 49ers, Gore has become a steady NFL journeyman over the past few years, playing for the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills.

Gore, who turns 37 next week, set a career-low in rushing yards and yards-per-carry last season with the Bills but expressed interest in re-signing with the team. Instead, he will be joining the Jets' backfield, which is in desperate need of some help. The Jets signed Bell last offseason to bolster the offense but he struggled to provide a spark, rushing for only 789 yards on 3.2 yards-per-carry.

Earlier this week, Jets coach Adam Gase said he was planning to implement a "less is more" approach to Bell's usage in order to get the most out of the running back.

"I do think we have some guys that can help maybe lessen the load on (Bell) to where it's not all on him," Gase said in an interview with ESPN's "Flight Deck" podcast. "Hopefully, we can get some of the younger backs to where we can make a good one-two punch to where we can really excel instead of feeling like it's just all on him all the time."

It looks like part of that plan will involve Gore taking on some of the load, though it's unclear if Gore will be much of an improvement at this point. Either way, the Jets will need to figure out an effective running strategy if they hope to improve offensively. They finished dead last in offensive yards per game last season.
