Those within the New York Jets would like everybody to stop asking if defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, the third overall pick from the 2019 NFL Draft, can be acquired before next Tuesday's trade deadline.
Per Rich Cimini of ESPN, both coach Adam Gase and general manager Joe Douglas have assured Williams that no trade is imminent or will occur this fall.
"He's going to be here. Those [stories] are false," Gase told media members on Wednesday. "I talked to Quinnen. I have not heard one thing from anybody in the front office about him being traded. ... There's nothing to that. It's false."
While the Jets are 0-7 and on pace to select Clemson Tigers superstar quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the first pick in next year's draft if Lawrence goes pro, Williams remains a valuable asset who is signed for two more seasons with an additional available fifth-year option. The 22-year-old leads the Jets with three sacks.
"There have been some times where I really see him show up," Gase added. "It's the consistency of down in and down out, max effort, playmaking ability, finishing the plays and doing the right thing, not having roughing-the-passer penalties. That's the maturation of a young player."
Granted, Gase may not be with the Jets through Christmas, let alone by the start of next year's draft. Nevertheless, Gang Green selling Williams now would be bad business unless a buyer went beyond his first-round valuation in a proposed transaction.
