The New York Jets are used to winning. They win every year. The only problem is they win the offseason. Every year a splash move vaults them to the back page headlines and Jets fans get hyped for the season. This year in, year out off-season championship is what brings fans hope. And as I have said a thousand times, it is the hope that kills.
This year may be a little different. There is no Aaron Rodgers signing coming down the Jersey Turnpike to light up the headlines. There is no top-tier quarterback being taken in the first round of the draft. There is no easy, headline-grabbing, quick fix to the problems the Jets have.
They aren’t a quarterback away from being contenders like we were led to believe two years ago when Rodgers joined, or the following year when he returned from his devastating injury. There is no “Zach Wilson” or “Sam Darnold” are the franchise quarterbacks we have been looking for. There is no magical player or players that the Jets are going to sign to fix the quarterbacks they have already broken.
This is an offseason the Jets won’t win. And it’s time you prepare yourself.
Sure, the Jets might still grab a headline this offseason, but it won’t be enough. The Jets could sign a quarterback in free agency, but the best QB available is Sam Darnold. That isn’t going to have them hoisting the offseason championship trophy. They may draft a quarterback in the first round, but at best it will be a free falling Shedeur Sanders who likely doesn’t want to play for the Jets. If not Sanders, it will be a huge reach for a guy like Jaxson Dart who might be a fifth-round pick in a different draft class.
They may grab a wide receiver at some point but it is likely not going to be one that is going to move the needle on their championship odds. He won’t be better than Davante Adams was before he was released.
So, what is the plan for the offseason then if not to “win it”? What should this team try and accomplish if it isn’t to make fans excited about a potential Super Bowl run in 2025? The simple answer is to stop the bleeding.
The Jets had an awful few seasons and things seem to get more hectic every year with their terrible ownership and read, fire, aim mentality. It’s time to bring some stability to the organization.
The Jets will be a less talented team in 2025 than they were in 2024. There’s no getting around that. But with the reduction in talent, hopefully will come a reduction in drama. Rodgers was a lightning rod, and the organizations attempts to cater to his every whim made them some Frankenstein’s monster version of the Green Bay Packers (please don’t take that to mean I blame Rodgers for last season because the only person I blame for last year is Woody Johnson).
The Jets will be a better coached team in 2025. That’s not saying Aaron Glenn is the next Bill Belichick, but he will be better than a guy who was given the job five games in with no warning.
2025 should be about eliminating the drama, developing talent, bringing stability to the organization, and building the foundation with the roster. It can’t be about making a splash signing or a future crippling draft-day trade.
So, get ready Jets fans. Prepare yourselves for a year of Tyrod Taylor to Josh Palmer. It won’t be sexy, but it is the right thing for 2025.
