Jets WR Garrett Wilson Signs 4-Year, $130M Extension

The Jets‘ wide receiver Garrett Wilson has agreed to a four-year, $130 million contract extension that makes him one of the highest-paid wideouts in the NFL, according to a report from ESPN. The deal includes $90 million guaranteed — the fourth-most ever for a receiver — and will keep him in New York through the 2030 season.

With an average annual value of $32.5 million, Wilson’s extension ranks fifth among all NFL wide receivers. He’s also the first wideout in league history to earn more than $31 million per year after just three seasons.

A Rare Commitment From the Jets

Wilson still had two years left on his rookie contract, including a fifth-year option worth $16.8 million in 2026. But the Jets didn’t wait.

This marks the first time under the NFL’s current financial system (in place since 2011) that the Jets have extended a former first-round pick after just three years. The last player to get a second deal from the Jets was defensive tackle Quinnen Williams — but only after his fourth season.

This time, the team moved quickly. Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey have made it clear they want to keep the franchise’s best young talent. A long-term deal for cornerback Sauce Gardner, another 2022 first-rounder, is also in the works.

“I’m hopeful I’m a Jet for life and that we get this thing rolling and that all of our best days are ahead of us,” Wilson said back in May.

From Frustrated to Focused

Wilson’s big numbers in 2023 — 101 receptions, 1,104 yards, and seven touchdowns — told one story. His expressions on the field and cryptic postgame quotes told another.

By the end of last season, there were rumors he might want out. But two major changes shifted his outlook: the hiring of Aaron Glenn as head coach and the quarterback change from Aaron Rodgers to Justin Fields, Wilson’s former college teammate at Ohio State.

Glenn has already said he wants Wilson to be a focal point in the offense. Fields and Wilson have been vocal about their excitement to reunite, and that relationship could be the key to unlocking another level in Wilson’s game.

Elite Numbers Despite QB Chaos

Wilson turns 25 next week, and he’s already carving out a historic path in green and white.

He’s the first Jet since George Sauer (1966–1968) to post three straight 1,000-yard seasons. He’s also just the fifth player in NFL history to top 1,000 yards and 80 catches in each of his first three years, joining Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Michael Thomas, and Odell Beckham Jr.

Even more impressive: Wilson has done it while catching passes from seven different quarterbacks — Aaron Rodgers, Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco, Mike White, Trevor Siemian, Tim Boyle, and Chris Streveler.

Now that his contract is settled and the quarterback room is stable, Wilson is set to lead the Jets into a new era — one that, for the first time in years, feels like it might have staying power.
