At long last, the Los Angeles Chargers are genuinely back in the swing of things as training camp officially got underway on Thursday, with Jim Harbaugh kicking things off with an introductory press conference.
Always entertaining and energetic, Harbaugh touched on several topics in his time at the podium, one being what many Bolts fans feel is the biggest problem on the roster right now, that being the offensive line. Well, the interior offensive line, that is, as the Chargers are certainly set on the outside with tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater.
Now, it's not as if the Chargers didn't do anything to improve the interior in the offseason, as they went out and added right guard Mekhi Becton, who was made the 11th overall pick in the 2020 draft by the New York Jets and is coming off a resurgent season with the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
But then you've got this odd situation involving Bradley Bozeman and Zion Johnson, both of whom had disappointing 2024 campaigns from an overall standpoint. As such, the two were seemingly set to switch positions, with Bozeman moving from center to left guard and Johnson from left guard to center.
And while that may still happen, Harbaugh confirmed during his presser that nothing has been set in stone just yet. Asked specifically about the situation, he says the duo will alternate positions on a daily basis at practice until a final decision is made.
"That's the plan right now, Harbaugh said. "I don't know how many days that'll go like that until we lock it in, but we know we've got a trusted agent, known friend in Brad Bozeman at center. And we know he can—he could be a really good guard and has been a really good guard.
"Zion—known friend, trusted agent, starting guard. Will it be a better combination with him at center and Boze at guard, or is it going to be better with Zion at guard and Boze at center? Let's find out. How are we going to know? Like we do everything, they play the best.
"So, we'll get them in the best position for them and for our team."
Harbaugh then went on to praise Trey Pipkins, who started all 15 regular-season games in which he appeared last season, saying that in an ideal world, the 2019 third-round pick would be the team's "swing tackle."
This will undoubtedly be an interesting scenario to watch as training camp unfolds.
