The Los Angeles Chargers have some hard decisions after losing their second straight wild-card game, this time to the New England Patriots, 16-3.
One of those tough decisions involve the future of offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who's offense produced just a single field goal in the season-ending loss. When asked after the game if Roman was the right play-caller for this team, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he doesn’t have an answer to those questions “right now” and ultimately assigned the blame to himself.
"Right now, I don't have the answers," he responded, via Kevin Patra of the NFL website. "We're going to look at that, at everything. It really falls on me that we wasn't at our best tonight. I don't have the answers. I wish I did. We'll work hard. It'll be a new beginning."
When asked again by another reporter to coax an answer out of Harbaugh repeated, “I don't have that answer right now.”
The Chargers had 207 yards of total offense in the game and went 1-of-10 on third down conversions. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had an off-night, connecting on 19-of-31 attempts for 159 yards. He also lost a fumble.
During the regular season, the Chargers had one of the better offenses in the NFL, ranking 12th with 333.8 yards per game and converting 45.8 percent of third downs. Herbert also had another good season, earning his second Pro Bowl selection and throwing for 3,727 yards with 26 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, but he is now 0-3 in his postseason appearances.
Moving forward, the Chargers will need to get more dynamic on offense. Firing Roman and bringing in a new voice to turn around the offense could help.
