Jimmy Garoppolo jokes 49ers story 'will be a hell of a movie'

San Francisco 49ers veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo seems to appreciate the uniqueness of a saga that truly began when his employer traded up to select signal-caller Trey Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

"The script is still being written," Garoppolo said about his story during a Tuesday morning appearance on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR, per Tom Dierberger of NBC Sports Bay Area. "One day, this will be a hell of a movie, that’s for damn sure."

Garoppolo essentially offered a public farewell to 49ers fans this past February and also suggested at that time he knew he would be traded during the subsequent offseason. However, the 30-year-old underwent shoulder surgery in March that sidelined him through summer workouts as Lance shifted to the top of the depth chart. No team made a significant push to land Garoppolo's services, and he agreed to a pay cut in August to stay with the Niners for at least the beginning of the 2022 season.

Garoppolo spent Week 1 as a backup but was called into action when Lance suffered a broken right ankle the following Sunday that has ruled him out indefinitely. Jimmy G has since gone 2-1 as a starter and helped the 49ers obtain a 3-2 record ahead of this Sunday's matchup at the 2-3 Atlanta Falcons.

Garoppolo added during Tuesday's comments that he wants this tale to end with the 49ers celebrating a Super Bowl LVII victory in February. Such a development could spark questions about San Francisco's future quarterback plans, but Garoppolo insisted he's taking things "one game at a time."
