Jimmy Garoppolo’s 2-game suspension for violation of NFL’s PED policy set to cost him a whopping $11.25 million
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Jimmy Garoppolo appears to have done an unwilling favor to the Las Vegas Raiders. In the early hours of Friday, news broke that the NFL had issued punishment for the quarterback.

Garoppolo allegedly violated the league’s PED policy during the 2023 season. He had already fallen out of favor with the Raiders after being benched with just six games under his belt. His future with the silver and black came under contention when head coach Josh McDaniels got fired.

Furthermore, there’s less connection between the new coach, Antonio Pierce, and Garoppolo. Pierce chose to stick with fourth-round rookie Aiden O’Connell for the rest of the season. This could make things easier for owner Mark Davis. Even though Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract that included $33.75 million guaranteed last offseason, the Raiders are likely to cut him.

As per NBC Sports, if Davis shows the Illinois grad the door, then he will leave $17.068 million in dead money but save Vegas $11.269 million on the salary cap. So the suspension came as a boon for the Raiders. This would help them look for a better alternative for the quarterback spot next season.

Could a familiar setting revive Jimmy Garoppolo’s career?

The New England Patriots selected Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He was primarily brought in as the backup to Tom Brady, who was 36 at the time. The onus was that Brady would continue for a few more years, then hand it over to Garoppolo, who would take the Patriots to the next stage.

However, he never managed to dislodge arguably the best football player, winning two Super Bowl rings while sitting on the bench. Three years later, the San Francisco 49ers took him to another Super Bowl, losing to the Chiefs. In the offseason of 2023, the Raiders signed Garoppolo, but they had a special clause put in place.

Throughout his time in the NFL, the habit of being injury-prone never left him. He only had one full season, which came in the 49ers jersey during the 2019 season. The list of injuries that kept him out for so many games includes a broken foot, a torn ACL (2018), a high ankle sprain (2020), a calf, and a thumb (2021).

He is more than likely to enter free agency before the 2024 season starts. But which team will suit his tools the best?

The New York Jets

Why would he move to the New York Jets? Aaron Rodgers is close to full fitness after surgery. If he gets the clearance, which is more than likely to be the starter, then where does Garoppolo fit in?

There’s only one connection: head coach Robert Saleh. He was the defensive coordinator for Garoppolo at the 49ers when he reached the Super Bowl. On top of that, Saleh is looking to bolster the Jets’ offense in the offseason.

Meanwhile, Zach Wilson‘s time at Big Apple is quickly coming to an end. Garoppolo may not be the best guy with basic protection in front of him, but he could play second fiddle to Rodgers.

New England Patriots

Even though things did not work out the first time, a second shot at Foxboro could revive Jimmy G’s NFL life. Since Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Patriots have only had one positive season with quarterback Mac Jones. It’s all downhill afterward.

Legendary and one of the longest-serving head coaches in the league, Bill Belichick, left after last season, and Jared Mayo was appointed. While Mayo hinted that he aims to add the best players in the positions of requirement, adding Garoppolo won’t be a bad move. He knows the culture, albeit; that was when McDaniels was running things as the offensive coordinator.
