J.J. McCarthy got off to a nightmare start in his debut for the Minnesota Vikings, but the night ended with his name alongside a legendary quarterback's in the NFL record book.
McCarthy and the Vikings came from behind to beat the Chicago Bears 27-24 on "Monday Night Football." Minnesota managed only four first downs the entire first half and trailed 17-6 following a pick-six on the opening drive of the second half. McCarthy had just 48 passing yards at one point midway through the third quarter.
The young quarterback then completely turned things around. The former Michigan star threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and ran for another score to lead the comeback. More importantly, he proved that he is able to handle adversity even at the highest level of football.
The Vikings trailed 17-6 at the start of the fourth quarter. McCarthy then put the team on his back.
In doing so, he became the first starting quarterback since 1985 to win a game when trailing by 10 or more points in the fourth quarter of his NFL debut. The last player to accomplish the feat was Hall of Famer Steve Young in 1985.
McCarthy is only the second quarterback to overcome such a deficit on the road in his NFL debut since 1950.

McCarthy was far from the most skilled player in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he showed on Monday night why the Vikings traded up to 10th overall for him.
McCarthy has a combined record of 64-3 as a starting quarterback dating back to high school.

The Vikings have mortgaged their future on McCarthy because he is a proven winner. He could not have looked much worse at the start of Monday night's game, which was not all that surprising after he missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury.
In the end, McCarthy did what he has almost always done -- found a way to come out on top.
