After an up-and-down first season under center, J.J. McCarthy is finally starting to show the Vikings that the keys to the franchise might actually be safe with him.
Sunday night's upset win over the Cowboys in Dallas proved to be McCarthy's best performance yet, too. On NBC's "Sunday Night Football" national stage, McCarthy led Minnesota to a 34-26 victory, galvanizing his team despite learning it was eliminated from playoff contention before kickoff.
McCarthy completed 15-of-24 passes for a season-high 250 yards with three total touchdowns and one pick, a bizarre interception that occurred after a tipped pass during the opening possession of the game.
From that point on, McCarthy showed a poise and composure that allowed his team to win despite a lack of production from Aaron Jones Sr. on the ground.

The show McCarthy put on against the Cowboys followed another stellar outing, a 31-0 shutout of Washington. In his first shutout win of his career, McCarthy threw 163 yards on an extremely efficient 69.6 percent, with three clean touchdown passes and zero picks.
These recent games for McCarthy are helping to change the narrative around the national champion the Vikings selected with the 10th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Minnesota even doubled down on its investment this past offseason by deciding to let Sam Darnold depart as a free agent on the heels of a Pro Bowl season.
Minnesota was willing to hand the keys to McCarthy even though it couldn't see him shake off any growing pains on the field due to missing his entire rookie season with an injury.
But the pressure is now on McCarthy to end the season strong and provide the franchise, fans and maybe his veteran teammates like star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, most importantly, a confidence that they can return to the contender status they enjoyed one year ago again. McCarthy's mindset also adds to that confidence.

"I love playing ball. I realize how blessed I am to be in this position, and most importantly, I love the people I do it with," McCarthy said when asked about dealing with adversity after the game on Sunday.
And to be fair to the critics, McCarthy has struggled just as much as he's had success. He's thrown multiple interceptions in four of his eight games played. He has 11 total in eight games. McCarthy also missed significant time in 2025 with a high ankle sprain. However, the hope for the Vikings is now that he's turned a corner, both in health and level of play, providing a reason for optimism going into the offseason.
