J.J. Watt addresses possibility of Steelers trading T.J. Watt

The Pittsburgh Steelers have already made one major move that has raised questions about their direction. Could T.J. Watt eventually become another name on the way out?

His brother doesn't expect it. J.J. Watt appeared on "The Dan Patrick Show" on Thursday and was asked directly whether there was any chance the Steelers could trade T.J. Watt.

"I would highly doubt that," Watt said.

He quickly acknowledged that he didn't have inside information, but the question led into a much larger discussion about what exactly Pittsburgh is trying to accomplish this season.

J.J. Watt questions Steelers' direction

The Steelers traded away star CB Joey Porter Jr. late Wednesday evening, a move J.J. Watt found difficult to square with a team seemingly built to compete right now.

Pittsburgh has Aaron Rodgers in what he has said will be the final season of his career. The roster also includes established veterans such as Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and Jalen Ramsey.

That would normally look like a team pushing its chips toward the middle of the table. Trading away Porter without replacing him with a comparable player sent a different message.

"Is this an all-in operation to go win right now or are you trying to do like this mini rebuild?" Watt asked. "I'm not 100% sure."

Watt described Pittsburgh as being in "middle land," caught somewhere between trying to make a run and beginning to build toward whatever comes next.

T.J. Watt trade would send a much bigger message

There is an important distinction between J.J. Watt being asked about his brother and an actual report that Pittsburgh is shopping T.J. Watt. Nothing in the conversation suggested the Steelers are actively trying to trade him.

Still, the question isn't coming completely out of nowhere. The Porter trade has created uncertainty over how Pittsburgh views the rest of this season. If the Steelers are still trying to make a run with Rodgers, moving T.J. Watt would be difficult to reconcile with that approach.

J.J. Watt clearly doesn't expect that to happen. What he couldn't answer was the bigger question surrounding Pittsburgh right now. Are the Steelers making one final push with their veteran roster, or have they already started looking beyond it? After the Porter trade, even J.J. Watt isn't entirely sure.
