The Los Angeles Chargers took a one-year flyer on running back J.K. Dobbins last season and it largely paid dividends.
He recorded his career high in rushing yards and remained healthy for a large part of the year which has been the main criticism of his career thus far.
With his surprising breakout, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would be back with the team in 2025, but it turns out that isn’t the case.
Early on in the free agency process, the Chargers pivoted to former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris and it became clear that Dobbins wouldn’t be back.
He and the Denver Broncos agreed on a one-year deal that will likely make him the starting running back.
After having the best season of his career in Los Angeles, Dobbins seems to have a chip on his shoulder after they kicked him to the curb.
He spoke with reporters about the entire odd free agency process and said, “They have to see me twice a year. That’s my thoughts on it.”
He didn’t explicitly say anything negative about the Chargers organization, but it’s clear the way they went about business left a sour taste in his mouth.
The Chargers and Broncos already hate each other because of their division rivalry, but this Dobbins saga will likely escalate the ill will.
Their matchups next season will feature two starting running backs who were cast away by their former teams, so they will both have something to prove.
