The quarterback position remains the biggest question mark for the Cleveland Browns this season. Joe Flacco will start the year as QB1, but the Browns have two rookies behind him who they’ll eventually want to evaluate. Ideally, one of them proves to be the franchise quarterback, though Cleveland also has two first-round picks in next year’s draft to address the position if needed.
The Browns face a difficult start to the season coming off a 3-14 campaign. There’s no sugarcoating the tough schedule ahead, and things could get ugly quickly. Starting with Flacco, a veteran who knows the division well, makes the most sense. The Browns open against the Cincinnati Bengals—a team Flacco is very familiar with. This second stint in Cleveland feels different for the veteran, and that could be a good sign.
“I think that’s the one advantage—that’s the one thing about quarterbacks,” Flacco said of having a full training camp with the Browns. “I feel like mentally, you do become a better quarterback, a more experienced quarterback. You’re always learning something. So, if you can keep your physical attributes the same, or even just call those even, then yes, I think as the years go on, you gain knowledge and become better at the position.”
The last time Flacco suited up for the Browns, he was signed off the street and went 4-1 as a starter, helping the team reach the playoffs. He elevated the offense, igniting the passing game with over 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns in those five games. While Flacco is prone to turnovers, he also puts points on the board—a tradeoff the Browns will take.
Flacco built a strong connection with David Njoku in 2023, and newcomer Jerry Jeudy could also thrive with him at quarterback. After last year’s offensive struggles, Cleveland must score points to stay competitive. Kevin Stefanski is back to calling plays, and new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will look to bring a fresh spark. The Bengals don’t boast a world-beating defense, so Week 1 presents a key opportunity for Flacco and the offense to find early rhythm before facing tougher opponents.
Cleveland and Cincinnati kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday in the “Battle of Ohio” to open the NFL season.
