'Joe might have him on distance' - Dallas Cowboys' Brian Schottenheimer compares former Tennessee QB Joe Milton III to one of the greatest players in NFL history

If there is one thing that Tennessee Vol fans know about their former quarterback, current Dallas Cowboys backup signal caller Joe Milton III, it's that no one in the program's history has been able to throw the ball as far. That includes some tremendous talents including one of the greatest players in the history of the sport in Peyton Manning.

Even a league veteran such as Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has to think a second when looking back at a player who has as strong of an arm as Milton. But Schottenheimer did manage to come up with a name when asked at his press conference on Friday - Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre. The two were together in New York with the Jets in 2008.

"The arm strength at 40, 41, whatever he was, was incredible. Joe might have him on distance if I'm being honest with you. Joe might be able to throw it farther, but the RPMs are very close."

That's pretty high praise, as the former Green Bay gunslinger was as good as anyone as pushing the ball down the field and hitting on big plays.

However, the trick for Milton, as Tennessee fans know very well, is to incorporate the touch on all of his passes, including the short and intermediate routes. He also has to find that balance of being able to read the defense and situation and know when to check down and when to push the ball and be aggressive. That's perhaps the hardest skill for anyone quarterback to master.

But I've said it before - in my almost four decades of watching football, Milton is as physically gifted of a player at the quarterback position that I have ever seen. If he can add the touch and decision making to a cannon of an arm, a monster of a build, and good speed with the ball in his hand, then the Cowboys might have found a gem at the position for years to come.

Of course, we'll have to see if that light ever comes on for Milton. It's at least a good start for the former Vol in Dallas.
