Joel Klatt has become one of the most recognizable voices in college football, but even the best broadcasters are susceptible to on-air slip-ups. During Saturday’s showdown between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas Longhorns, Klatt accidentally referred to Ohio Stadium as “The Big House,” the nickname for Michigan’s stadium.

The mistake drew a quick, lighthearted correction from broadcast partner Gus Johnson, who immediately jumped in with, “Don’t say that!” Klatt laughed it off, calling it “a little slip of the tongue,” but the moment quickly spread across social media.

The timing of the mix-up made it even more noticeable. The Buckeyes were hosting one of the biggest games of the 2025 season in Columbus, with "College GameDay" in town and a packed crowd inside “The Shoe.”

To Ohio State fans, there is no worse name confusion than with their archrival, Michigan. The comical moment also showed the fun dynamic between Johnson and Klatt, who have called countless major games together over the years.

Joel Klatt and His Broadcast Role

Joel Klatt is the lead college football analyst for Fox Sports. A former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback, Klatt joined Fox in 2013 and quickly became a mainstay on college football coverage. Known for his straightforward analysis and player-focused breakdowns, he has worked his way into being one of the most trusted voices in the game.

His partnership with Gus Johnson, Fox’s lead play-by-play announcer, has become one of the most popular duos in sports broadcasting. Together they cover the network’s biggest college football matchups each week, including high-profile Big Ten and Big 12 contests. Their chemistry has made them fan favorites, mixing Johnson’s trademark excitement with Klatt’s detailed analysis.

The Stage in Columbus

The setting for the slip-up was Ohio Stadium, better known as "The Horshoe" or “The Shoe,” one of the most famous venues in college football. Hosting more than 100,000 fans, the stadium has long been home to some of the sport’s most memorable games and is a centerpiece of Ohio State football tradition.

By accidentally calling it “The Big House,” Klatt mixed up the Buckeyes’ home with Michigan’s stadium, the rival venue located just up the road in Ann Arbor.

On Saturday, “The Shoe” was packed for the top-five matchup between Ohio State and Texas. It was not only a potential College Football Playoff preview but also the kind of game that draws national attention. The energy in Columbus made the slip stand out, though fans and viewers largely treated it as a lighthearted mistake rather than a serious blunder.

Johnson and Klatt Keep the Broadcast Entertaining

Johnson’s quick reaction and Klatt’s good-natured response kept the moment fun. The two have a strong reputation for balancing big-game intensity with humor, and this was just the latest example. For Ohio State fans, it will be remembered as a slip that came during one of the biggest games of the season, but it also displayed how even polished broadcasters can mix up stadium nicknames in the heat of the moment.
