John Mara likely won't love how ESPN ranked Giants' 2025 coaching staff

The New York Giants have not experienced much success under their regime, and co-owner John Mara has already noticed.

Shortly after the Giants ended the 2024 season at a woeful 3-14, Mara suggested that he had "just about run out of patience" with head coach Brian Daboll, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, defensive coordinator Shane Bowen and general manager Joe Schoen.

Mara probably isn't going to love what ESPN's Ben Solak had to say about the Giants. For an article published on Friday, Solak ranked their coaching staff as the "32nd-best" in the NFL.

"The best defensive season for Bowen was with the 2022 Titans, which was just above a league-average unit," Solak wrote. "Of course, Daboll's best seasons came with the much-improved Josh Allen at the helm in Buffalo — otherwise, his best work was the 2022 season with Daniel Jones, which was also a league-average unit. And again, critically, was not sustained, developed or iterated on. It's tough to believe in a high ceiling with the Giants' current staff."

Daboll was Allen's offensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills from 2018 through the 2021 season. While the combination of Daboll and Jones guided the 2022 Giants to a playoff berth and a road postseason win, Jones went 3-13 over his final 16 starts with the club before showing him the door last November.

ESPN stats show that New York finished last season ranked 30th in the league with an average of 294.8 offensive yards per game and 31st with an average of 16.1 points scored per contest. Additionally, the Big Blue defense was 24th in yards allowed per game (346.8).

Daboll and Schoen seemingly hope that quarterback Jaxson Dart can show enough as a rookie to convince Mara to stick with the team's current regime beyond the upcoming season. That said, DraftKings Sportsbook had the 2025 Giants at +650 betting odds to make the playoffs as of Friday morning.

If Mara's team is as bad through Week 18 as that forecast suggests, there's a chance that Daboll won't hold onto his job through the campaign. Whether or not such a house-cleaning would include Mara parting ways with Schoen is unclear.
