Even the best general managers in the NFL make mistakes here and there. While Kansas City Chiefs GM Brett Veach has managed to put together a juggernaut over the last decade, even he isn't immune to the occasional miss.
But five years after it happened, this decision is still haunting him. The Chiefs could have taken running back Jonathan Taylor in the 2020 NFL Draft. Instead, they selected Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Now, Edwards-Helaire is fighting to stay on an NFL roster, while Taylor is looking like one of the best backs in the league.
The Indianapolis Colts superstar gave Veach yet another reminder of what could have been in Week 3 with an explosive performance.
It's hard to imagine now that Taylor fell all the way to the second round of the 2020 draft. The Wisconsin product took college football by storm, but NFL scouts were concerned with his high usage and fumbling issues. As a result, he was the third running back taken, landing with the Colts as the 41st overall selection, nine picks after the Chiefs drafted Edwards-Helaire.
Taylor proved his doubters wrong almost immediately. After an impressive rookie season, the all-purpose back led the league in rushing yards in 2021. He's had his fair share of injury problems over the course of his career, but over 1,200 carries in, concerns about his longevity seem silly.
Three games into the 2025 season, Taylor leads the league in yards on the ground once again. His explosive performance in Week 3 is just a reminder of what the Chiefs could have had. The former All-Pro had over 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns in a dominant win over the Tennessee Titans.
Taylor has established himself as one of the top running backs in football. Edwards-Helaire, on the other hand, has been a complete bust. After a decent rookie campaign, his production dropped each year until the Chiefs finally waived him after four seasons with the team. At the present time, CEH sits on the Chiefs' practice squad.
Now, fans are stuck imagining what this team could have become if Veach had made the right choice back in 2020. Sure, Kansas City has still been dominant over the last five years, but Taylor would transform this offense into a virtually unstoppable unit. The running game issues of today would be replaced by a true strength that the Chiefs could rely on when the passing attack isn't clicking.
Instead, fans have to watch Kareem Hunt and Isaiah Pacheco struggle to find yardage while Taylor waltzes to another rushing title.
