Things have moved quickly regarding Jonathan Taylor's thumb injury that was made public Tuesday.
James Boyd of The Athletic broke the news that Taylor's thumb injury would require surgery, which will happen today.
BREAKING: Jonathan Taylor will undergo thumb surgery tomorrow in LA with the hope that he can return in 2-3 weeks, #Colts owner Jim Irsay tells @TheAthletic. https://t.co/pJDoeGZ9CS

Boyd shared a lot of info that Colts owner Jim Irsay shared with The Athletic directly about Taylor's injury and the direction the team was heading in.
The timeline currently provided is two to three weeks, but it'll be something the team monitors as the recovery from the surgery progresses. Boyd's piece also shared details on the surgeon performing Taylor's surgery.
"According to Irsay, Taylo's surgery will be performed by Dr. Steven S. Shin, who is an orthopedic hand surgeon based in Los Angeles. Shin has previously performed thum surgeries on other star professional athletes like former New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, Golden State Warriors points guard Chris Paul and Anaheim Angels outfielder Mike Trout."

With Taylor sidelined for the next couple of weeks, the Colts will look to backup Zach Moss to operate as the team's bellcow. It's a role they trusted him with while Taylor was sidelined on the PUP list early this season. So far this year, Moss has rushed for 672 yards (10th in the NFL) with 141 carriers for five touchdowns.
If the two to three-week timeline stands true, the Colts would not need to place Taylor on IR. That obviously would be a good thing for the team, as they wouldn't be required to be without their star RB for at least four weeks. That would mean the Colts would have to either use one of their practice squad elevations to add a RB on gameday or release a player at another position to make room for a RB on the active roster. The Colts currently have two RBs on their practice squad with rookie Zavier Scott and Tyler Goodson, who is in his 2nd year in the NFL.
