The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on Monday, according to multiple NFL insiders including ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
After nine seasons in Buffalo — which included eight with Josh Allen at quarterback — McDermott finished with a 98-50 regular season record and an 8-8 record in the postseason. Despite their consistent playoff appearances, the Bills never reached the Super Bowl in the competitive AFC that included Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs.
The decision came two days after the Bills were eliminated from the 2025 NFL playoffs with a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC divisional round.
In the loss to the Broncos, Allen completed 25 of 39 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran 12 times for 66 yards and fumbled three times, losing two. Those four turnovers proved costly, with Allen admitting after the game, "I feel like I let my teammates down tonight."
After the news of McDermott's firing hit social media, Allen's name started trending. NFL fans were quick to bring up the poor performance from the 2024 NFL MVP against the Broncos as a cause for McDermott's ultimate dismissal.

"Dannnnng, Josh Allen got his head coach fired," said an X user. "It’s like Sean McDermott was out there turning the ball over himself!"
"Josh Allen coughed another playoff game and this time it got his coach fired," said one post. "Cold world."
"Players get coaches fired!" expressed another fan. "Sean McDermott’s defense did its job but Josh Allen failed the team and got his coach fired."
Josh Allen really got his coach fired after putting up an absolute stinker in the divisional round.

"No one is going to say it but… Josh Allen got sean mcdermott fired," reasoned a fan on social media. "They are going to blame everyone but Josh Allen, but it was Josh. Josh is also largely the reason for his success but the coach did not lose them that game."
The harsh reality of the NFL in 2026 is that franchises live and die by their star quarterbacks. One good or bad performance in a big game can have sweeping effects on the rest of the organization.
If Allen took better care of the ball against the Broncos and the Bills won the game, McDermott would be preparing a gameplan for the AFC Championship Game and the narrative would look different. At the same time, he is certainly not the only reason McDermott was fired.
Complaints about Allen on social media will not stop the Bills open head coaching job from immediately becoming one of the most desirable in the NFL this offseason as the coaching carousel continues to spin. Early reports suggest former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as a strong candidate to replace McDermott.
