Josh Allen’s 2025 season with Sean McDermott and the Buffalo Bills ended in heartbreak. Allen and Co. entered the NFL playoffs as the No. 6 seed in the AFC after finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record. Allen had another big year in Buffalo, registering 319-of-460 completed passes (69.3%) for 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. The reigning NFL MVP also added 579 yards on the ground and 14 rushing TDs on 112 carries.
The Bills defeated Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild card round, 27-24. Their season ended in the divisional round, though, after a heartbreaking 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos.
Someone had to take the fall after another failed season for Allen and the Bills. Buffalo has made the playoffs eight times in the last nine years. However, they never reached the Super Bowl.
McDermott has been in charge for all those nine years. The Bills front office decided that it was time to move on. They announced the firing of McDermott on Monday, less than 48 hours after their season-ending loss to the Broncos.
Allen has not publicly commented on McDermott’s dismissal. However, a new report from Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News revealed Allen’s reaction to the news.
“A source close to Josh Allen tells me he’s appreciative of his 8 years with Sean McDermott. Allen, I’m told, has faith in the leadership of the team under Terry Pegula and Brandon Beane, and will take an active role in participating in the upcoming head coaching interviews,” Skurski reported on X.
McDermott was already in charge when the Bills selected Allen as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The four-time Pro Bowl QB has not had any other head coach in his NFL career besides McDermott.
As the report indicates, however, Allen’s faith in Buffalo’s front office remains steadfast. On Wednesday, the Bills announced they had completed an interview with offensive coordinator Joe Brady for the role of head coach. Brady is the first of what is expected to be multiple candidates as McDermott's successor.
