Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs says his controversial touchdown celebration Thursday night was misconstrued.
Jacobs drew criticism for seemingly doing a handcuff celebration (video here) after scoring during Thursday’s 27-19 win over the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisc. Jacobs did the apparent celebration in his second game back after he was the subject of a domestic violence investigation.
After the game, Jacobs claimed his celebration had been misconstrued and taken out of context.
“They didn’t get the whole celebration,” Jacobs said. “Me and (Savion Williams) came up with the celebration. … It was going to be ‘Break Every Chain.’ It’s a gospel song. The media’s going to run with it. They’re going to make it into something it wasn’t.”
Josh Jacobs explained his celebration after his first TD tonight when he put his hands behind his back. He said it was an ode to the gospel song, “Break Every Chain.” He said the TV cameras didn’t get the whole thing. https://t.co/F65YnLMqwF

Whether you believe Jacobs or not, the optics weren’t great, and it is easy to see why fans were upset. The reaction makes even more sense if you are aware of the details of the case.
Jacobs was held to 39 yards on 21 carries in Thursday’s win, though he did score twice, one a rushing touchdown and one a receiving score.
