Josh Metellus shuts down common misconception about Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy with unique comparison you won't see coming

The Minnesota Vikings have put the future of the franchise on the right arm of second year quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Is it the right decision? Only time will tell, but taking him 10th overall is a major signal that they believe he will be a great player for them.

Going into the 2024 NFL Draft, there were a lot of varying opinions on McCarthy and his potential. His resume was an interesting one. He only lost one game in his college career as the starting quarterback (2022 College Football Playoff vs. TCU), but in his two years as the starting quarterback, he rarely played in close games and didn't play in a whopping seven fourth quarters.

Josh Metellus dispels myth about J.J. McCarthy

One of the things that McCarthy was knocked for was a perceived "lack of arm strength." It was evident on his college film that there was plenty there, and he threw a 61 mph football in the NFL Scouting Combine drill to measure arm strength, second in event history behind only Joe Milton's 62 mph, and he can throw the ball over them mountains like he's Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite.

After practice, Josh Metellus had some comments about McCarthy's arm strength, which he compared to former backup quarterback Sean Mannion.

"He has one of the best zips I've seen since being in the league, and I've been around some guys who could sling it. Shoutout to Sean Mannion, he was slinging it. He had a great arm. But yeah, (J.J.) throws the ball as good as I've been around. He can put the ball where he wants to."

Part of the reason why people didn't think McCarthy had good arm strength was due to the fact that his deep ball was inconsistent. That was due to poor mechanics, not poor arm strength. He zips the ball incredibly well across the middle and that's where you win and lose in the National Football League.

The comparison to former backup quarterback Sean Mannion is an interesting one, though. He wasn't viewed as a player with high-end arm talent by the masses, but he certainly did have arm talent at his disposal.

Metellus isn't the kind of guy to say something he doesn't mean, which is a good sign for those who continue to doubt McCarthy.
