Justin Herbert, Joey Bosa included in Pro Football Focus's 50 best players of 2023 list

This week, Pro Football Focus is slowly rolling out it's "PFF50" list -- the 50 best players in the NFL right now. Justin Herbert and Joey Bosa were the two Chargers players expected to be included, and as of Wednesday morning both have appeared on the list.

Herbert came in at No. 35 on the list, the third quarterback revealed after New York's Aaron Rodgers (No. 45) and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson (No. 41), and is ostensibly the fifth-ranked quarterback on the list -- assuming Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts appear.

On Herbert:

"Any analysis of how good Justin Herbert is needs to factor in the rib injury he played through for most of last season. Torn rib cartilage is the type of injury that would keep normal people sidelined from an ordinary job, yet Herbert passed for over 5,000 yards, including the playoffs, while gutting it out. He has now had the lowest turnover-worthy play rate (1.6%) in each of the past two seasons, and the Chargers have brought in new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to try and tap into his full potential in 2023."

Bosa came in at No. 30 on the list, the only edge defender of the 30 players revealed thus far. Likely to appear in the top 20 players, which will be revealed Thursday and Friday, are Bosa's brother and 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa, Cleveland's Myles Garrett, Pittsburgh's T.J. Watt, and Dallas' Micah Parsons.

On Bosa:

"Injuries have knocked Joey Bosa down this list, but he is still one of the most destructive defensive linemen in the game when he is healthy. The Chargers star played just six games in 2022 but earned three consecutive 90.0-plus pass-rushing grades before that. His younger brother, Nick, is now drawing all the attention, but Joey is still a force in his own right."

Herbert and Bosa's 2022 campaigns were both defined by injuries, but healthy years and organizational changes could propel both or either up the 2024 edition of the PFF50.
