Following his record-breaking performance in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson has had a rough go of things the last two weeks.
Limited to just three receptions for 14 yards in Sunday’s 28-24 win over the Detroit Lions, Jefferson admitted that the multiple double- and triple-teams he now sees on a regular basis thanks to his new superstar status has been exasperating.
“It’s definitely difficult to keep my cool during that moment,” Jefferson told reporters following the game. “Of course, I want the ball. Of course, I want to be a playmaker — do stuff for my team. When that stuff comes, I can’t do too much about it. Listen to the play calls, do what I’m told. K.J [Osborn] and Adam [Thielen] are getting wide open because they be getting those 1-on-1 coverages.”
Sunday’s win marked the fewest receiving yards and second-fewest receptions Jefferson has had in his career. His 62 combined receiving yards the last two weeks are also the fewest he’s had in a two-game in the NFL.
While Detroit focused on eliminating Jefferson from the equation, Minnesota’s passing game adapted. As Jefferson was commanding the bulk of the attention, K.J. Osborn hauled in five receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown, while Adam Thielen added six receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown.
“Just being the type of player that I am, double and triple teams are going to come,” Jefferson said. “That is the luxury of having Adam and K.J. on the other side. Even when they want to double team me, I know that somebody will be open.”
