Kadarius Toney claims Chiefs are lying about his injury in expletive-filled rant

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney wanted to clear the air that he's not missing Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens due to his hip injury. Instead, he's missing it because his team doesn't want him around. 

On Saturday, the 25-year-old was ruled out for Sunday's contest due to the birth of his first child and a lingering hip injury. However, in an emotional and expletive-filled rant on an Instagram livestream early Sunday morning, Toney accused the Chiefs of lying about his injury.

"I'm not hurt," Toney said. "None of that s---, save that s--- ... I'm not hurt, none of that."

Toney practiced as a limited participant this past week but is set to miss his sixth consecutive game with an injury designation. As a result of hip and ankle issues, Toney hasn't played since Week 15 against the Patriots, during which he bobbled a fourth-quarter pass that led to an interception. Apparently, Kansas City also fabricated the latter injury, according to Toney.

"It [goes] from hip to ankle to this to that," Toney added, suggesting the Chiefs have made a habit of changing the injury designations he claims they're lying about. 

If Kansas City is lying about injury designations, they could be subject to punishment from the NFL, though it's unclear whether that will be the case since no other source has validated Toney's assertion. 

The rant was just the latest example of the former New York Giants first-round pick causing a distraction for a team he's been on since entering the league in 2021. The Chiefs acquired the oft-injured wideout from the Giants before last season's trade deadline, and the initial results were encouraging, considering he was a difference maker in its win over Philadelphia in Super Bowl LVII. 

This season, however, Toney proved why New York was so willing to cut ties with him quickly. Aside from his Week 15 blunder, Toney dropped multiple key passes in Kansas City's season-opening loss to Detroit. Additionally, Toney drew an offsides penalty in Week 14 to negate a go-ahead touchdown in the Chiefs' 20-17 loss to Buffalo.

Toney will presumably finish his 2023 season with just 27 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown in 13 games played. At this point, it feels almost certain that Toney won't be on Kansas City's roster next season, and only time will tell whether his latest boneheaded decision will cost him his NFL career.
