The Kansas City Chiefs are piecing together their practice squad for the 2025 season after submitting their initial roster cuts. The Chiefs whittled down their roster from 90 players to 53 on Tuesday, and in the following days leading up to Week 1, general manager Brett Veach will continue to tinker with things.

While the 53-man roster drew most of the spotlight, the practice squad remains a crucial part of Veach’s roster construction. It serves as a home to developmental prospects and insurance policies, which the team relies upon week after week.

A quick note to remind everyone that practice squads are capped at 16 players, but if a team employs someone via the International Players Pathway program, then they get an exception to use. The Chiefs have offensive lineman Chu Godrick on the roster, and he's been signed to the practice squad as a 17th player.

As the Chiefs officially announce their signings, here's a running list for fans to track who’s sticking around in Kansas City.

Tracking the Chiefs 2025 practice squad

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB

Given the uncertainty in the backfield and the Chiefs' penchant for bringing back friendly faces, it's not at all a surprise to see Edwards-Helaire back in the fold. Could be important with the age of Kareem Hunt and the injury histories of Elijah Mitchell and even Isiah Pacheco.

Mike Edwards, S

There's some relief knowing Mike Edwards is back on the practice squad for the Chiefs. The team is young at safety and having a proven vet around who is still such an intelligent player on the field will reap dividends by season's end.

Chu Godrick, OT

Godrick remains a roster exception here as the Chiefs continue to develop his talents at tackle.

C.J. Hanson, OL

Hanson was a seventh-round flyer on very impressive measurables in the 2024 NFL Draft. It might take another year for the Chiefs to decide what they really have in the former Holy Cross product.

Coziah Izzard, DT

The Chiefs are going to want to keep multiple defensive line options around on the practice squad, and Izzard is an interior player who signed as a rookie free agent out of Penn State in the spring. Brings nothing as a disruptor but offers value as a run-stuffer.

Brodric Martin, DT

Speaking of run-stuffing tackles, Martin is a former third-round draft pick by the Lions who flamed out after two seasons of inconsistency and injuries.

Kevin Knowles, CB

Knowles is one of the more heartening players to slip through waivers for the Chiefs. Never made waves at Florida State, but he looked impressive this summer on special teams and drew praise from Chief coaches.

Chris Oladokun, QB

The Chiefs brought back their scout team quarterback, which everyone knew they would. The most predictable move here.

Hal Presley, WR

Presley joined the Chiefs after the team granted Justyn Ross's request for a release. It's heartening to see the Baylor grad stick around after signing so late in the offseason. Typically that makes for a harder climb, but Presley had a nice showing in July and August.

Carson Steele, RB

A preseason sensation one year ago for the Chiefs, Steele has fallen down the depth chart a bit, but he still holds value for the Chiefs roster as a capable backup.

Melvin Smith, DB

Smith might not have made the active roster, but the rookie free agent landed a practice squad role after starring at Southern Arkansas. That's a major leap and he should be a player to watch if he sticks around.
