Kansas City Chiefs Cement Dynasty Status
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Super Bowl LVIII was a game full of twists and turns. The back-and-forth action resulted in a rare overtime finish in the big game. In the end, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 25-22. Kansas City became the first team in 19 years to win Super Bowls in back-to-back seasons. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have now won three Super Bowls in a five-year span. If it was not official quite yet, the Kansas City Chiefs firmly cemented their status as a dynasty by winning Super Bowl LVIII.

Patrick Mahomes is now a dazzling 15-3 in the playoffs in his career. By winning against the 49ers again, the Chiefs quarterback is now 3-1 in Super Bowl games. And now, Mahomes has earned Super Bowl MVP in all three of those victories. On the flip side, Kansas City’s head coach, Andy Reid, is now further cementing his status as one of the best head coaches in NFL history. By winning Super Bowl LVIII, Reid is now the fifth head coach all-time to win at least three Super Bowls.

What were some of the main takeaways that led to the outcome of Super Bowl LVIII? Plus, just how rare of a run have the Kansas City Chiefs been on while securing a new NFL dynasty? Let’s kick it off.

Blow For Blow

This Super Bowl was tight, seemingly from start to finish. Even though there was not much scoring early on, both teams were getting some shots in. That made it feel like a heavyweight fight, as a result. Christian McCaffrey had an early fumble. And just as it looked like Kansas City was going to score a touchdown, Isiah Pacheco eventually fumbled in the red zone. The first half only produced 13 points total. However, there were a few missed opportunities on each side.

This allowed the Chiefs to make necessary adjustments and find what worked best after a slow start. Meanwhile, the 49ers could not ever fully pull away. San Francisco appeared to have the upper hand a few different times. But after each team went blow for blow with each other throughout most of the day, the 49ers could never deliver the true knockout punch. Because of that, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to do what they have done multiple times on their dynasty run. And that is, answer in the big moments when the lights shine brightest, or with their back against a wall.

Another Deficit

Speaking of having their back against a wall, the Kansas City Chiefs were once again in familiar territory in the Super Bowl. They probably wish they did not have to be in that position during any of their Super Bowl trips. Yet, the Kansas City Chiefs have somehow answered continuously on this dynasty run when facing significant deficits.

In all three Super Bowl wins during this recent stretch, Kansas City has faced a 10-point deficit. The Chiefs were once down 20-10 in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV against San Francisco. In Super Bowl LVII, the Philadelphia Eagles were up 24-14 at halftime on the Chiefs. And in this year’s big game, Kansas City once trailed 10-0 in the second quarter.

For as much as the Kansas City Chiefs likely do not want to be in those positions, they get out of those holes better than anyone. During this run with Mahomes and Reid, the Chiefs are now somehow 9-2 when trailing by seven points or more at some point in a playoff game. To put that into perspective, 60 percent of Mahomes’ playoff wins have materialized when he has had to overcome an early deficit.

Chiefs Are Kings In Big Moments

The Kansas City Chiefs have built a dynasty in the modern NFL in multiple ways. You can look at their dominance over the AFC West. You can look at the different play styles the Chiefs have utilized during their Super Bowl runs. But most of all, Kansas City are simply the kings in big moments, executing when needing to make plays with the game on the line.

There were many plays that you could point to late in this game, both in the fourth quarter and in overtime. Mahomes was able to hit on quick passes and throws down the field late in the fourth quarter to force overtime. He and the Chiefs were close to winning it on that drive before overtime. But nonetheless, they responded and remained poised when trailing by three with under two minutes left in regulation.

In overtime, Mahomes utilized his legs to help cement the Kansas City Chiefs as a dynasty team. His throws to Rashee Rice, Travis Kelce and Pacheco were all ones that allowed the skill players to make their own magic after the catch. And of course, on the game-winning score by Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs outsmarted the 49ers defense and executed in the big moments at the end again. Kansas City simply got better when the game got tighter.
